GistXL has been improving its proprietary English-Chinese bi-directional machine translation system for over a decade. The system allows intelligent translation of full sentences between the two languages in real-time.

The hybrid system integrates rule-based, statistical-based and example-based approaches, and allows easy addition of domain-specific dictionaries and user dictionaries. Existing dictionary domains include Finance, Healthcare, Telecommunications and Internet/Mobile Communications.

The system is currently used mainly to support the proprietary applications belonging to GistXL but can be licenced to third-party developers or end-users who require fully automated translation solutions. The system can be installed on client servers or delivered as a web service.

The award-winning Gist Mobile Translation System (GMTS) allows mobile users to translate SMS, MMS and WAP messages on-the-fly in text, image and audio formats. Users can send messages in one language and either receive the translation back on their own mobile phone or have it delivered to the intended recipient in real-time.

The system is based on the the proprietary GistXL server-centric data-driven machine translation platform which is specifically customised to handle text messaging sentence characteristics and abbreviations. Its corpus-driven approach means that the translation quality continually improves as the system is utilised.

GMTS has been implemented with leading Asian mobile operators including SingTel, MobileOne and New World Mobile since 2004. The system was a prize-winner at the 2004 Singapore National Infocomm Awards for Most Innovative Product/Service.
